FIRE ACTION PLAN
Our corridors and stairwells and communal areas must remain free of obstruction at all times. We will remove and dispose of any item that is left by residents, without notice.
All your appliances must be switched off from the wall socket when you are not in residence.
Smoke detectors inside your flat must never be covered.
The Carbon Monoxide detector in your flat should not be removed or relocated.
The Fire Blanket in your kitchen must be visible and easily accessible.
If any of your fire protection items are missing, or you suspect they are not operating correctly, inform the SFPG Office immediately.
In the event of a fire alarm activation, leave your flat immediately. Do not stop to collect personal belongings. Go directly to the assembly point indicated on the fire notices in your building. Do not re-enter the building until a member of staff or warden has indicated that it is safe to do so.
If you suspect that cooking in your flat has caused the alarm to activate, communicate this to a member of staff or Resident Warden immediately.
Do not smoke anywhere in our buildings, including your own accommodation. Do not use your window or balcony area to smoke.
Do not tamper with any fire equipment, smoke detectors or extinguishers. Fire, Electrical and Security Officer, maintains and services our Fire alarm system on a 6 monthly basis. Fire alarms are tested on a weekly by our inhouse maintenance team.
All SFPG provided portable electrical appliances are tested annually, Any faulty items during the test procedure are replaced immediately.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE
Fire Wardens are the first responders to fire alarm activations and will follow the agreed call-out protocol in respect of summoning the Fire & Rescue Service.Fire Wardens attending fire alarm activations will investigate the cause of the alarm and assist in directing people toward the fire assembly point, ensuring safety, supporting the fire fighters and ensuring that people do not enter the building until it has been verified that to do so will be safe.If a fire alarm sounds or if a fire is discovered, fire wardens are responsible for ensuring that the building has been evacuated and that, students/residents and other visitors present go to the fire assembly point(s) and remain there until it has been confirmed safe to re-enter the building by the Fire service. The fire warden for the building or place where the alarm has activated will verify whether anyone is unaccounted for and report this to the Fire Brigade Incident Officer.In the event that the Fire Brigade was not called in response to the fire alarm activation, the decision to allow people to re-enter will be taken by the senior fire warden present.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU HEAR A FIRE ALARM
Leave the building by the nearest exit.
Close any doors en-route without delaying your escape.
Do not stop or return to collect personal belongings.
Do not use any fire fighting equipment unless you have been trained.
Do pass any information to the building responsible person at the assembly point.
You must remain at the assembly point.
Return to the building only when authorised to do so.
FIRE WARDEN PROCEDURE / FIRE BRIGADE CALL OUR PROTOCOL
If you discover a fire or other emergency for which the building should be evacuated activate the alarm using the nearest available break glass call point, you should then initiate SFPG’s Emergency call out procedure.
FIGHTING A FIRE
The safe evacuation of people is an absolute priority. Wardens may only attempt to deal with small fires, if it is safe to do so without putting yourself at risk, using portable firefighting equipment.
Ensure the alarm is raised BEFORE attempting to tackle any fire.
ON HEARING THE FIRE ALARM
All occupants of the building must respond to alarm activations
The fire alarm is a continuous ringing bell
The Warden will check the fire panel and, if safe to do so, go to the zone where the alarm has been activated to investigate if there is a fire or false alarm.
In the event of fire summon the emergency services (DIAL 999) as necessary
Wardens will supervise / affect the safe evacuation of all occupants to the designated assembly point(s).
Everyone must leave the building by the nearest safe exit and report directly to the Fire Marshall at the assembly point.
A CALM ORDERLY EXIT IS ESSENTIAL, WALK QUICKLY
DO NOT RUN OR STOP TO COLLECT BELONGINGS
On arrival at the assembly point Wardens must check their registers. Registers, visitors book etc. will be taken out to the assembly point by the warden the result of this check must be reported to the Fire Marshall /Senior person present as soon as it is completed.Fire wardens are responsible for ensuring corridors/buildings are cleared. Fire wardens should ensure that in the event of their absence, another member of staff is available to take over their duties:All Fire Wardens should report to Fire Marshall that corridors/buildings are cleared.1. The Fire Marshall / senior person present will liaise with the Fire Brigade on their arrival.2.The building must not be re-entered until the Wardens are notified it is safe to do so by the Fire Brigade.It should be stressed that no one in the building should delay their evacuation pending instructions from a Fire Warden. The absence of Fire Wardens should have no effect on the evacuation, but could affect the reliability of information that is passed on to the Fire Brigade when they arrive at the incident.
FIRE EVACUATION FOR RESIDENTS
Your safety is really important to us. If there’s a fire look after yourself, and your family, by following this procedure:
Read the fire safety information in your building. Check the safe way to get out and where you need to go.
Your building has an alarm system we’ll maintain it and make sure it’s regularly tested
Keep all communal areas clear. We’ll take away anything that’s left in these areas such as; bikes, shoes, door mats, plants and rubbish.
Don’t smoke in any of the communal areas
Don’t store anything flammable in your flat.
If fire breaks out in your flat
Quickly get out the room where the fire is and close the door behind you
Tell everyone in your flat that there’s a fire and to get out. Don’t stop to get any of your things.
Shut your front door behind you when you leave
Don’t try to put the fire out
If there’s a break glass call point, smash the glass to raise the alarm
Call the fire service on 999
Wait outside, away from the building, at your assembly point.
To call the fire service – Dial 999
When the operator answers give your name and ask for FIRE
When the fire service answer give the address of where the fire is
DON’T HANG UP until the fire service have repeated the address back to you correctly.
ESCAPE ROUTES
Fire Action notices are behind the front door of each flat, and this will indicate evacuation route. We have fire action notices on every corridor and every floor throughout all the building, with emergency exit signs and route clearly indicated.
EVACUATION ARRANGEMENTS FOR DISABLED PEOPLE
On activation of the fire alarm stop and collect any mobility aid that you require to assist your safe evacuation. Your warden will be aware of your disability and will inform the fire bridge accordingly to assist you evacuate.
